Civ 5 - FPtD - Ehiopia - Update 2

We left off with our little civilization needing to make a choice for Pantheon.  There were many good suggestions, but most people agreed that we should go with Desert Folklore even though it wasn't quite the desert location we had hoped.

On Turn 14, we finished our scout and started building a granary.  Our Spearman uncovered an ancient ruin and was paid in gold and we started the tradition tree with our first social policy.  On turn 19, we finished researching mining and started teching Calendar in hopes of some day constructing Stonehenge.  We also adopted Legalism and our Spearman found another ancient ruin that turn.  The remains of that civilization joined our empire allowing our fledgling empire to grow.

We met two other Civilizations on turn 20.  We met Shaka of the Zulu Empire and Elizabeth of England.  Well, things just might get interesting later.  Two turns later we met Bucharest and earned 15 gold.

Construction of our granary was completed on turn 25 and we started to build a Shrine.  Three turns later, after learning the secrets of Calendar, we suspended construction of the shrine so we could start to build Stonehenge.  Luckily, the very next turn, we adopted Aristocracy which will hopefully help us get Stonehenge built a bit quicker.  Our spearman also "borrowed" a worker from Bratislava on that turn.

On turn 31, our scout was given a crude map at the site of an ancient ruin.  We discovered where London was on this map.  The next turn we finished Animal Husbandry and started researching Archery which we completed five turns later at which point we teched writing.

Writing was researched on turn 43 at which point we started studying Masonry.  We also accepted an embassy with Shaka in hopes that he wasn't close to us and luckily England is between us and the Zulu.  Three turns later we adopted Landed Elite and our scout met the city state of Mombassa and grabbed us 15 more gold.

So,where do we go from here?  Do we try to beeline toward Currency in hopes we can get Petra.  Is Petra even worth it for our capital?  Should we build a settler next?  Build a library?  Finish our shrine?  Shaka's on our continent.  When do we start building some units?  We'll have a religion before too much longer.  What should we choose as our founder and follower beliefs?  Where should we look at planting a second city?  I'm not seeing any real strong city locations.

  2. Since Elizabeth is a naval civ, she'll probably try to build lots of coastal cities. If you want any room to send ships out, better place your second city on the coast (soon), perhaps on one of the river tiles west of Mombasa?

    If you are going Big Faith with desert folklore, getting those three CSes near you converted to your religion should be doable with one GP. Maybe if you take Papal Primacy as your founder belief, and fill in the opener and the +20 resting point policies on the Patronage track, you can ally with all three CSes and use them as a buffer between you and Elizabeth/Shaka. Your capital is not placed in a way that makes it vulnerable to a naval invasion until ranged naval units with a range of 3 become available (either natively or from promotions) so any attackers will have to travel by land, through those CSes, to get to you.

    As to follower beliefs, Holy Warriors (purchase pre-industrial land units with faith) seems like a good choice for a Big Faith scenario. I'm sort of assuming that you intend on filling in the Piety social policies to really make use of faith. Since the opener for that unlocks Great Mosque of Djenne, perhaps you can work that into your plans as well.

    You've got four tiles that Petra would apply to. I don't know if that's worth it, but I guess its secondary advantages are that you will probably be able to build it faster than other civs in heavily desert-y areas (if any) so I suppose it has defensive value. That might not be enough to go for it, though. (I'd rather press onwards towards Theology/the Great Mosque and sneak in Masonry when you get a chance).

    I think I'd build a settler next and stake out a coastal spot before Elizabeth gobbles up all the coastline. And get a caravan up and running to whichever is the most financially appealing CS so you've got cash onhand.

  3. Great stuff, SoRefined! I've never used either that founder belief or that follower belief so that could be very fun. The Great Mosque sounds like a strong idea too. Agree with you on Petra.

    The general consensus so far is definitely settler next. At least one person thinks I should do two settlers next. A caravan will be nice especially if one of the CS has a trade route quest.

    As for city sites, the four that have been suggested to me so far are: the coastal river spot you suggested, the desert hill near Bratislava, the coastal forest/tundra spot between the furs and the deer, and the coastal forest spot 1 tile SW of the wheat west of London.

    All things being equal, I'd prefer the final spot, but I'm not sure if it's worth the diplomatic penalties I'll incur with England (although I might be able to encourage Shaka to invade England which would keep her busy. Also, there's a decent chance that Liz will gobble up that spot prior to me getting a settler there.

    Your city location makes sense because it's closer to my capital and it wouldn't likely incur as many diplomatic penalties. The city on the desert hill looks like it will have too much overlap with my cap and with Bratislava and has no unique luxury resources. The tundra city would actually be adequate for a tundra city, but I'm pretty sure I could settle that whenever I wanted to.
